How to Flush an RV Toilet Properly?
Flushing an RV toilet correctly is simpler than most people think, but doing it wrong is the #1 cause of clogs. Here’s the proper technique.
The correct flush sequence: Press the pedal (or flip the lever) fully and hold it down for 3-5 seconds. This ensures the flush valve opens completely and allows maximum water volume into the bowl. Release slowly — don’t yank your foot off the pedal, as this cuts the flush short and leaves waste in the bowl.
Add water if needed: After flushing, check that the bowl holds water. If it doesn’t, the blade seal or ball seal isn’t closing properly. Add 1-2 gallons of water from the faucet to refill the bowl before your next use. A bowl that doesn’t hold water is a seal problem, not a flush problem.
Follow with paper: Always flush toilet paper after use, not before. Paper left sitting in a dry bowl absorbs moisture and expands, creating a clog. Flush paper immediately after use with a full pedal press.
Black tank volume check: Before flushing a large amount of water (like after cleaning), check your black tank level. Don’t flush more than 2-3 gallons at once if your tank is more than half full — you risk overfilling. The general rule: 1 gallon of water = 1 gallon of black tank capacity used.
